Small things about GMail make it such a pleasure to use. The has:attachment string can be used in the GMail search bar to look for mails with attachments.

Do such a search and open one conversation. Only the mails that contain attachments are expanded and the others are collapsed. Brilliant attention to detail there. You almost won't notice it at all.

I have a gmail complaint.
Yesterday I got a warning that my gmail account was 95% full and to delete stuff to make space. And I had a very hard time selecting big mails to delete! Two simple but handy features (which are there in all other mail client) would have been so useful:
1) Sort by email size.
2) See sizes of folders (ok, labels in this case).

In fact, I remember, some random email client (indiatimes, I think) had this very cool feature in which I could delete just an attachment from an email, retaining the rest of the content of the email.

I've never been bitten by the size bug in GMail yet. Yeah, I do agree that GMail does not boast of features that a conventional mail would possess.

There are a lot of tiny things that the GMail folks do to make email processing simpler and nifty. This was one of them.

If space is your primary concern when it comes to choice of web mail, Y! Mail has unlimited storage.
