Anand caught Natarajan bowled Hariharan

This happened when I was in 7th or 8th standard. Hariharan (fondly known as Manaa in my family) bowled a rank full toss and Anand heaved it towards the mid-wicket boundary.  I looked at the ball travelling towards me with morbid fear.  It was a full blooded hit.  How was I ever going to hold on to it?  I had never played with a 'real' cricket ball till then.  To everyone's relief, except maybe for Anand's, I held on to the catch without much fuss.  I was elated and relieved.  Anand was a blaster of a batsman in the Preethi CC side (Preethi CC played in the Palacode league).  Manaa is my cousin who had worked and played for India Cements in the Madras league (2nd division, IIRC).  Manaa had come to Hosur on a vacation and was practising with Preethi CC.

This was perhaps my only close interaction with Manaa that I remember.  Manaa, an introvert, passed away on Monday after a five day battle in the CCU at Narayana Hrudayala.  A virulent variant of malaria snatched him away from us.  All along, Manaa, an introvert that he was, had ignored the symptoms.  He must have contracted the disease in Zambia/Kenya from where he had returned on a short vacation.  The parasite had ravaged his system beyond repair.  He recovered well for the first two days in the CCU after which his blood pressure started dropping periodically.  He finally succumbed to multiple organ failure and a cardiac arrest.  We just did not have to lose him this way :(
  • Be aware of common diseases and their classic symptoms
  • Be aware of physiological effects of common diseases
  • Always get your blood tested in a professional laboratory (proper diagnosis is very very important)
  • Do not self medicate yourself for more than a day
  • Be close enough to a doctor whom you can call and discuss your symptoms
Manaa did not have to die, for us to learn these :(
